Cory Webb just launched a wonderful idea implemented well: http://resources.howtojoomla.net/
HowToJoomla! Resources uses a custom Google search to only search relevant Joomla! sites with your keywords. This isn't rocket science, it's just a really good idea that someone should have come up with long ago. Cory is well known and respected in the Joomla! community, so I think this just might stick. |
Just a quick annoucement, I am back from my Christmas holidays and I had a great start in 2009 -- I hope you had a great start too
I am sorry for not giving any support over the past few days. As you can imagine I needed a break from the PC and I wanted to spend some time with the family (it's that time of the year...). Oh and I silently released Projectfork 2.0.5 on Christmas eve, I didn't have the time to announce it here. |
In a recent post it was announced that the Joomla Extensions Directory (JED) will soon stop accepting extensions that aren't GPL, and then phase out those extensions and Joomla 1.0 extensions. Naturally, this caused an uproar in the community, as these types of announcements always do. I'm going to steer clear of our opinions on the matter. This reason for this post is to let everyone know that we're establishing a new home for extensions AND templates: CMS Market! We've always felt left out since templates haven't ever been allowed in the JED (though templates are technically extensions right? They do fall under Extensions > Template Manager in the default admin template). Our timing for CMS Market is extremely fortunate. We thought it's main purpose would be for those who don't have sites to sell their products, but with these latest changes to the JED, CMS Market will be just as useful as a directory! The goal of CMS Market is to be the best and most reliable marketplace/directory, and not be biased at all. Any money CMS Market makes will only serve to make it better for its users.
Also, CMS Market will be donating a portion of its profit back to the community. |
Our team has recently expanded into Apple iPhone app development. Our first approved app has just hit the app store, iWhoopie Cushion! For $0.99, you can have a little light-hearted fun over the holiday break. Does this mean that we may also be developing iPhone apps for a certain CMS? We'll see in 2009

It's official, our good friend Roger Perren is stepping down from his lead position at JoomlaNews (http://www.joomlanews.ch). Roger made the announcement yesterday, with his 400th post in this article (English translation). Roger originally contacted Tobias about ProjectFork and since then has frequently posted about it and provided the german Projectfork translation and demo site. I personally got to work with Roger on a new logo for JoomlaNews after the Joomla police made him remove the Joomla logo mark, and it was a pleasure working and chatting with him, even through the language barrier . Roger's successor will be Yannick Spang and it sounds like the site will be in extremely capable hands, welcome Yannick!
Roger will focus on his business Blueforce Internet Solutions. |
I've never understood why Joomla comes with several groups (Public, Author, Editor, Publisher, Manager, Admin, Super Admin), yet the only choices for Access Level in viewing a module are Public, Registered, and Special. What if I only want the public to view certain thinks like a message to register and not have registered viewers see it? What if I want to hide something from everyone but Administrators?
We're continuing our model of "we feel your pain" at JoomlaPraise and have developed a lightweight module that will save you from irritating workarounds and having to tell a customer "that's not how it works", introducing AccessLevelModule! Simply enter a module position into AccessLevelModule and you'll be able to pick exactly which Joomla User Groups can view the module. You can also choose which module style (xhtml, rounded, etc) the modules will produce when rendered!
Here's a screenshot of the module parameters:

Simple enough?

We've just release ProjectPraise, a template make specifically (but not only) for ProjectFork! JoomlaPraise members also get a companion theme for ProjectFork, which has all the styles of ProjectPraise, and also takes on any overrides you make to your template, such as heading and tab colors. This means that you can publish ProjectFork to your frontend and customize as easy (or easier) than an online project management solution like Basecamp or Zoho Projects, but you have total control!
In ProjectPraise, we introduce a new feature called Frontend Template Parameters Interface (or Frontend Params). When you're logged into your public site as super admin, you'll see a tab that reads "Customize your template". Click on this and you have instant access to all the template params you'd see in the backend, and much more! First off, for any input that is a color override, we've added a slick color picker tool (though you can still copy and paste a hex color). We've added an image upload interface to overwrite any image in the template, whether it's the logo, bullet, info, warning, quotes, etc. Then there's the integrated Banner Manager in which you can upload an image and pick which page it will be displayed as a banner. You can choose to use your favorite banner module as well. We also give you the option to switch all corners from straight to rounded.
You might also notice that we're using all the tableless template overrides created in our last template, Division. This is a trend that will continue. As we develop new features, we'll carry them forward into future templates, making our members' lives easier and easier.

It's time for another weekly update with a few non-critical bugfixes. And I have also released the first commercial extensions.
|
Every now and then it happens that I drink too little coffee which inevitably leads to mistakes. If you have downloaded the 2.0.3 patch or full version before this announcement, please download and re-apply the update from 2.0.2 to 2.0.3 (or any other update) to fix a very annoying problem with the task list. Since the bug has been discovered in less than 24 hours after the release I am not going to release another patch. Instead I have repacked all the 2.0.3 packages with the correct file. I have to be more careful next time, sorry :)

With this release I hope to finally get rid of the constant email and notification problems that kept reoccuring in each version in a different way, along with other minor problems. The patch also fixes one critical bug where it was impossible to install and configure processes properly. But there is more...

Although Thanksgiving isn't an international holiday, at JoomlaPraise we're still going to give thanks to the international Joomla community. By using the coupon code "gobblegobble" subscribers will save 15% until 11:59pm Friday night. That means newcomers (and renewals) will gain access to all member templates, extensions, and support for 1 year at the very modest price of $63.75. For unlimited domain usage, this is probably the best deal around. For anyone who's on the fence, we'll be releasing some extremely useful templates soon, such as ProjectPraise - an intranet template that will be paired with a custom ProjectFork template. Head over to subscription and save some money (don't forget your coupon code:gobblegobble)! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving week everyone!
