For those unaquainted, SEF stands for "Search Engine Friendly". In Joomla, the default URLs are NOT Search Engine or Human Friendly. Virtually every client we've ever built a site for requests SEF. We use to only use Open SEF though is was always buggy so we were anxious to jump ship when Artio JoomSEF came out. Later we found their sneaky link in the meta information and were very disapointed as this is one of the sneakiest advertisement tricks in the Joomla community. Now they offer a commercial version without the ad so that solves that issue...I guess (though the guys at Kanga Internet released a free ad-free versions here ). Now that we've been building bigger sites with more pages, we're having problems with the way JoomSEF creates alternate URLs if there are multiple links to one article, which is by creating another version with -2.html, -3.html, etc. This is bad news for a company that spends lots of money and time optimizing certain URLs. Supposedly the well reviewed 404 Auto-Redirect Handler for JoomSEF can solve this issue, so we're trying this next. If that doesn't work, we're looking at:
