PraiseMenu coming to a JoomlaPraise template near you!

PraiseMenu JoomlaPraise Menu SystemConstruction is underway on our newest JoomlaPraise member extension: PraiseMenu! As you can guess, this will be a menu system either to be used in a JoomlaPraise template or standalone in any Joomla! template.

Currently the planned features are for the ability to easily change between the following menu styles:

  • Mootools Dropdown Menu
  • Suckerfish Dropdown Menu
  • Dropline Menu
  • Joomla! Split Menu

As with the default Joomla! menu module, you'll also be able to select from any existing menu to display in PraiseMenu.

Got any features you'd like us to include in PraiseMenu? Please comment on this entry and let us know! We're building this for you!

JoomlaPraise DocumentationAs we close in on the last of the 1st 50 Free Memberships, we're working on the last major area of the site: Documentation. You'll be seeing a new "Tutorials" link in the top blue bar. There you'll find helpful articles containing tips, tutorials, documentation, and videos training you on all the site templates and extensions, along with some Joomla! best practices.

I'd like to take the opportunity to give thanks to all the members that have helped us fast track the release of this site to the public. You guys (and gals) are the reason we're doing this.

Welcome "Soft Launchers"!

We just couldn't bring ourselves to add a cliche' BETA to our site logo, so we're calling this early release of JoomlaPraise a "soft launch". We've invited 50 lucky folks to have their $75 subscription fee waived and begin downloading our first templates and module. The main goal of this is to reward those who supported us in the infamous Joomla! 1.5 Template Contest, and secondly to get the site ready for its prime-time debut.

On March 29th, correction: Feb 29th  we'll be opening the doors up to the public, so that means the next 4 days will be rather interested to say the least.

Thanks so much to the 1st 50, you're helping see our dreams come to fruition.

Make a name for yourself developing for Joomla 1.5!

Make a name for yourself My main concern with choosing to go with Joomla 1.5 for JoomlaPraise.com was the lack of stable extensions for 1.5. Consider those concerns quelled, and allow me to announce my new favorite extensions:

RSform! - Thank goodness for this extension. I recently wrote about my frustrations with Fabrik. RSform is by far my new favorite form component for Joomla!
JomComment & MyBlog - The guys over at Azrul do a darn good job. I'm writing the article using MyBlog and I absolutely love it. MyBlog if effortless and works fantastic in 1.5. On top of that, the developers are very responsive on their forum and very nice guys.
phpBB3 & RocketWerx's phpBB3-J1.5 Bridge - I was a big fan of phpBB2 and missed it when I strive to stay 100% Joomla and refused to use bridges. I do think that FireBoard is a million times better then SimpleBoard/JoomlaBoard, but it just can't compare to phpBB3. Andy and the guys at Rockettheme did a great job with the bridge, it works perfectly.

This leads to my theory: Jumping on development of extensions for Joomla 1.5 has made way for new extensions as older extensions lag behind in converting to 1.5.

Wow, that was quick: 1.0.15

The remote file inclusion vulnerability that was the reason for 1.0.14 stemmed the need for another security update.  Apparently the upgrade patch from versions before 1.0.13 to 1.0.14 left a vulnerability in the configuration.php.

You can insert the line manually:
if(!defined('RG_EMULATION')) { define( 'RG_EMULATION', 0 ); }

I'm glad to see the  Joomla! team is getting back to quick fixes for the 1.0.x series.  I'm all about 1.5.x, but ALL of our clients are running 1.0.x.

First 1.5 Security Release
1.5 Security PatchIt's official, the first security release for Joomla 1.5 is out. The main issue was a high priorty security vulnerability in one of the new features which is an XML-RPC Blogger API plugin. We're very greatful to the Joomla! Bug Squad and the Joomla Development Team for identifying the risk and quickly releasing the update. The only thing that stinks is now everyone has to break off and update all their 1.5 sites, sounds like a fun weekend!

And 1.0.14 Released as well

As expected the team has released 1.0.14 stable as well. It basically has the same security fixes that 1.5.1 has for 1.5.

One Week Until Liftoff

LaunchWe'll be launching in 1 week, or 7 days, or 168 hours, or 10,080 minutes, or 604,800 seconds! A whole lot of work has gone into this site. We're launching with 2 Free Joomla Templates, 2 Club Joomla Templates, and at least on Club Joomla Extension. 2 more Club Joomla Extensions are in the works and will be released very soon. Without giving away any details, we also have 1 major Joomla Component in its infancy and let's just say it will revolutionize your workflow.

Update 2/17/08:
So obviously we've pushed back our launch date of Feb. 14th, but with good reason. We decided to totally rebuild the site from the ground, up in Joomla 1.5. We reviewed all the necessary extensions and all were available in 1.5 (surprisingly)! So rather than risking any inconvenience to our customers at a later date, we decided to use all our personal lives to make this happen as quickly as possible. The site will be ready to go live on February 29th, just 15 short days after the original launch on a day that only comes around once every 4 years (Leap Year).

Search Engine Not So Friendly
Joomla SEFFor those unaquainted, SEF stands for "Search Engine Friendly". In Joomla, the default URLs are NOT Search Engine or Human Friendly. Virtually every client we've ever built a site for requests SEF. We use to only use Open SEF though is was always buggy so we were anxious to jump ship when Artio JoomSEF came out. Later we found their sneaky link in the meta information and were very disapointed as this is one of the sneakiest advertisement tricks in the Joomla community. Now they offer a commercial version without the ad so that solves that issue...I guess (though the guys at Kanga Internet released a free ad-free versions here ). Now that we've been building bigger sites with more pages, we're having problems with the way JoomSEF creates alternate URLs if there are multiple links to one article, which is by creating another version with -2.html, -3.html, etc. This is bad news for a company that spends lots of money and time optimizing certain URLs. Supposedly the well reviewed 404 Auto-Redirect Handler for JoomSEF can solve this issue, so we're trying this next.

If that doesn't work, we're looking at:
